…When a young colleague of mine brought an air purifier to the office one day, I was more than touched. It is one of the electrical air purifiers that have a motor that turns a small blade inside it. You pour an essence into a bowl of water, set the cap topped with the pump and viola! Then it buzzes and hums away, steadily purifying the air in the entire room.
During the lunch break I managed to pluck up the courage to go to my colleague’s cubicle to ask her where she picked up the fabulous little air purifier. As I slowly walking towards her, she turned, looked in way direction in horror, and then she instantly turned to the air purifier to increase the concentration of the lavender essence in it. I was totally mortified. Had I been over doing the tried and trusted men’s fragrances again? Had I stepped in something and not noticed the foul odour the must have been following me throughout he day? What had I done!?
Now I am not a stinky person by any stretch of the imagination! Of course in the hot season, I sweat as much as the other man, or woman. So there was no reason to be condescending about it was there? So, to continue the distasteful little saga, I continued as though I hadn’t noticed anything and instantly resolved to buy myself a different deodorant. Maybe some breath mints too for good measure?
After the rather unpleasant jolt to my self esteem, caused by the now infamous air purifier incident, I must admit I did begin to notice a lot more about my colleague. For one thing, the scent of the air purifier reflects her mood. Whenever she is happy and the whole world seems joyous, she has to have a heady citric scent running. I soon discovered that when she is feeling morose, and wants to kill the boss, the sent of lavender fills the air. (The very thought of that hurts each time I smell it!) When she is in one of those rather distant moods, the scent too tends to be rather distant. I have since discovered that it was some sort of oriental concoction that included ginseng and a whole lot of who knows what else!
So, to shorten an already meandering story, my air purifier co worker began to notice that there was a distinct deodorant smell about me. From a very scared and horrified look, she started to give me a weak smile occasionally. Soon we were going out. We were going out irregularly at first, but it became more frequently later on. All that thanks to a humble air purifier.
